‘Building
on Success ….’
Located
near the centre of the town, Dungannon Primary School opened
in 1967, to replace the town's original two schools. As it is
conveniently located within easy walking distance to all of
the town’s main amenities, the school is able to make full
use of the facilities in the area.
The close proximity of
Dungannon Nursery School and the local Grammar and Secondary
Schools is to the school’s advantage, as parents are able to
drop and collect their children with ease. In order to
facilitate integration, the mainstream classes are kept
deliberately small, the teacher to pupil ratio is currently 1
to 20. In addition, each of the three Learning Support Classes
housed within the school provides specialist support for an
average of 9
children.
The
184 pupils currently enrolled in the school are cared for by
13 full-time teachers and 19 classroom assistants. The school
strives to provide each child with a secure and happy learning
environment. Both teaching and non-teaching staff work
together to ensure that the individual needs of each child are
considered and met. A
family atmosphere exists within the school, as older children
are encouraged, through the house system, to get to know and
look after the younger members of the school community. The
caring ethos, which has been established within the school, is
extended to the wider community, as the children are
encouraged to participate in local events and support local
charities, on a regular basis.
The
enthusiasm of the Parents and Friends of Dungannon Primary
School has helped the school to provide modern equipment and
facilities for its pupils. The group has recently organised a
wide variety of events to raise funds to purchase 12 P.C.’s,
and is currently in the process of arranging further events,
which will be of interest to the whole community.
Good
behaviour, work and progress is rewarded at weekly awards
Assemblies, which are attended by local clergymen. The staff
as a whole encourage all pupils to be proud of what they have
achieved.
At
Dungannon Primary School, the teachers work together to ensure
that each child gets full access to all subjects, included
within the Northern Ireland Curriculum. While individual class
teachers are responsible for the delivery of core subjects,
such as English, Maths and Science, specialist teachers are
also used to provide access to subjects such as History,
Geography, Physical Education, Information Technology, Art
& Design and Music.

In
addition, the school also endeavours to bring the curriculum
to life by giving each pupil the opportunity to participate in
a wide range of educational visits. This year the senior
pupils will be embarking on two residentials, to Shanaghmore
in Co. Down and Llandudno in North Wales, while the junior
pupils will have the chance to visit Parkanaur, the Ulster
History Park, Peatlands, The Argory, Ardress, as well as the Tayto Factory.
From
the start of their school career, the pupils enrolled at
Dungannon Primary School are treated as individuals. When
planning their lessons, the teachers ensure that they consider
the needs of each child in their care. Through continual
assessment and standardised testing the school endeavours to
identify any potential problems that a child may be
experiencing as soon as possible.
Those
children whose difficulties cannot be catered for within the
normal classroom situation are provided with additional
assistance by the most experienced members of our staff. With
the assistance of the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator,
the teacher develops an Individual Education Plan that can be
delivered and reviewed by our experienced team.
While
the school has Junior and Senior Choirs, individual pupils
also have the opportunity to develop their musical talents
through musical tuition provided by the S.E.L.B. Music
Service. Pupils who show potential in the creative aspects of
their studies are also given the opportunity to receive sports
coaching from highly qualified governing body coaches who
visit the school on a regular basis.
Throughout
the year the pupils have access to a wide range of extra
curricular activities. The school has worked hard to develop
an after school activity programme that aims to cater for the
individual needs of every child. This year pupils have the
opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs including,
Netball, Mini-Soccer, Hockey, Badminton, Scripture Union, Art
& Craft, Music and Scripture Union.
While
children are given the chance to develop their individual
skills, they are given the opportunity to participate in a
wide range of team sports. This year the school has two mixed
teams entered in the Tri County Schools Sports Project’s
Mini Soccer Sevens Tournament and will have a girls team
participating in the I.F.A.’s mini-soccer league. The school
also fields hockey and netball teams which participate in the
S.E.L.B. Leagues.
Throughout
the year pupils from Primary 4 to Primary 7, as well as those
enrolled in the Learning Support Units, take part in swimming
lessons at the nearby pool, while during the Summer term
pupils have the opportunity to participate in Athletics
coaching sessions.
While
Dungannon Primary School was built in the late 1960’s it is
currently undergoing a major renovation programme. The school
is based on a spacious campus, which gives the children access
to large tarmac and grass play areas. The children enjoy
playing games on the games boards marked on the playground and
have every opportunity to use the sports fields adjacent to
the school.
The
current minor improvement programme funded by the S.E.L.B.,
has provided the school with modern purpose built facilities.
In addition to 10 spacious classrooms, the school is equipped
with three resource areas, a library, computer suite and
disabled facilities. The pupils have access to a large
assembly / sports hall and will be able to enjoy meals cooked
and served in the purpose built Dining Hall.
Pupils
and staff are working together to develop their own
environment. They have planted bulbs and are about to
establish hedgerows and wild life areas in the school grounds.
Plans have been drawn up to provide a new soft play area at
the front of the school. However, the children are already
working together to ensure
that the grounds are welcoming for all those who use the site.
At
Dungannon Primary School, we work together to ensure that each
child is educated in a friendly, relaxed and safe environment.
By taking an interest in the individual, our staff ensure that
each child develops to his or her
full potential.
