Purpose
of Classes:
To
provide a complete educational experience for pupils with
Moderate Learning Difficulties who reside in the greater
Dungannon area.
Description
of Centre:
All
of the classes are housed within the main school building and
have full integrated access to all of the facilities available
to mainstream pupils. A major renovation programme, has provided all three classes
with modern purpose built facilities, which enable the
teachers and other professionals to offer a positive learning
experience to all the pupils in their care.
The
head of the centre, teachers and classroom assistants, work
alongside specialist staff from outside agencies to ensure
that each child is provided with an individual education
programme tailored to their specific needs.
The physical needs of each pupil are also met by
speech, occupational and physiotherapists who regularly
provide support within the unit.
Integration
with mainstream classes is seen as a major part of each pupils
overall educational experience.
Every opportunity is taken to integrate pupils into the
everyday life of the school.
Whenever appropriate children are encouraged to
participate in mainstream classes.
Pupils in the junior classes, work alongside their
peers in Primary1, 2, 3 and 4, while senior pupils take part
in Art & Craft, P.E., Music and Sport with their
mainstream friends. Children
from all three classes socialise with the rest of the school
at break and lunch times and attend whole school activities.
Throughout
the day the children are under the care of their teacher.
However, each teacher is assisted by at least one
classroom assistant. At
lunch time the children take their meal with the rest of the
school, but they are supervised by specific staff who ensure
their safety while in the playground.
